A New Friend for Rumsfeld (washingtonpost.com)Drawing a sharp line between the Clinton years and the Republican years, before and after, is simply not true to the story. Yes, Clinton cut military spending more deeply than many Republicans wished. But many of Clinton's cuts were subsequently blessed by Rumsfeld. As this President Bush's defense secretary, Rumsfeld kept the Clinton force structure largely intact. No wonder Clinton likes Rummy.
These facts pose problems for Republicans, but also for Democrats. Republicans make a good part of their living demonizing Clinton, so they can't concede any of this. "Thankfully, we have a very strong country that survived his leadership," snapped the normally nice Andrew Card, Bush's chief of staff, when asked recently about some Clinton comments by Fox News Channel's Cal Thomas. Yes, indeed, we survived the creation of 22.9 million jobs and the turning of large deficits into large surpluses. But Card is such a nice guy that I'll stop there. You know, E.J.'s right, but why does he have to be so damn nice about it all the time. Note to any Liberal: be more of a self-righteous ass, we're good at it.
