It seems to me Paine is doing nothing but grasping at straws for something to support the left and squash the right. Lingering Sexism? Excuse me. Bull shit.
How, in the name of God and this green earth, is the Country Music community sexist? Twain and Brooks. Both very good singers, both of which me and my mother like. Their respective songs supporting women and gays don't bother us one bit. I do have to admit though I'm not a real big fan of Country music.
I count 5 times Paine attributes some of the grief the Dixie Chicks are getting due to their Gender. I'm sorry, that has nothing to do with it. The sexist percentage of Country Music listeners is comparable with the percentage of sexist people most everywhere in my experince.
"It matters too that Maines made her statement overseas." How? Welcome to the Global Community, Mr. Paine. You can make a statement in Zimbabwe, and it's still heard by and considered by the people accross the world.
Also, as some of you may notice, I'm not a big fan of sterotyping. Here are a few reasons why I'm responding a bit negatively to Paine; "...its pickup trucks, its NASCAR on Fox...", "...manifest that insecurity with such testosterone-fueled rage?", "...macho, ranch-owning, cowboy boot-wearing Texan president...", "...red-meat men and probably some "traditional" women...".
And finally, "The Dixie Chick-bashers translate their socio-economic anxiety and threatened masculinity into misogyny, fear and violence." So......, my mother not liking the Dixie Chicks, is responding like this becasue she feels her masculinity is threatened?
